Law & Religion Article

Today, I was just browsing through some of my old university's law websites and I happened to stumble on a paper I wrote for one of my law units (Law & Religion) in 2003. Wow! reading that paper it reminded me of the many hours I spent researching and putting together my paper, not to mention the 'good old uni days' haha... (cannot remember what mark I got for that paper, or why did my lecturer pick my paper to publish on the website :P...maybe because it was the more interesting articles written haha ;). So four years on...ahh..the memories of law school :P

Anyway...if you have nothing to do atm, please feel free to read it (I think its quite interesting...) and it also provides an insight as to I guess what legal research is all about haha...

The title is:
Statutory Clergy-Penitent Privilege: A Secular Necessity or Hindrance?
and a what the paper covers is written in the explanatory statement below
Click on the above title: Scroll down until you come to my name!

EXPLANATORY STATEMENT
This paper is an analysis of some of the relevant considerations for enacting a statutory clergy-penitent privilege under s127 Evidence Act 1995 (Cth). Its scope shall cover the major reasons as to why Australia has afforded statutory protection to a religious practice (confessions) and cover briefly the US position on the topic. The objectives of this paper are that the reader:
1) becomes aware of the religious basis for such a privilege;
2) gains a perspective of both sides; and
3) understands the issues put forth; and
4) is able to form his/her own opinion or conclusion.

Translation: If you confess to crime to a priest/clergy member - can the police use that 'confession' against you in Court?

So tired...

Following my past fortnight's activities...I am so tired :P I overslept and was late to work today :( (luckily enough I got a 'secret' way to my office which avoids all my other colleagues and secretaries in my department). My legs feel like lead and I got an abrasion on my knee (from basketball - thanks Ant ;). Glad that my volleyball game is on tomorrow and not today :P don't think I can jump...
Feeling sleepy...

Worlds Greatest Shave

My dear Readers,
This year I am participating in the annual 'Worlds Greatest Shave' to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. The event will take place on Friday 16 March 2007. As such, I am looking for sponsorship for this very good and worthwhile cause.

Whilst its normal for the participants to actually shave their heads for this event, I quite like my hair now and it was only shaved once (in the army)...so instead I have decided to shave/wax...my chest (yes in case you didn't know...I do have some hair on it.. ; ). I also think that dyeing (temporary) my hair pink is also part of the deal hmmm.... Think of the pain, discomfort and mental anguish I will be going through if/when you are donating/sponsoring me *don't laugh* :P. On a serious note, it is for a very good cause, so any sort of donations would be very much appreciated : ).

Of course there will be photographic evidence showing that I have actually gone through with it (for those sceptical type of friends I have) haha...

So the details are:
Go to the Official web page: http://www.worldsgreatestshave.com/
Go to the donations page ('sponsor a participant'), and either search using my name or by going into the donate to a group section and typing Ebsworth and my name will be listed together with the other gents participating.

Donations can be via credit card or bank deposit options on the website.

Please inform your friends or anyone else I know (or not know :P). Please don't hesitate to ask me anything.

Thank you very much!

Best Regards,
Darren

Lawyer's Aquatic Challenge 2007

Yesterday (after work), the firm took part in the annual Lawyers' Aquatic Challenge. Needless to say, this was an annual event contested by all the law firms in Sydney. Last year, my firm won the entire event, mainly due to some really strong swimmers in our firm as well as a very large group of people competing :). I took part in this thinking it could be a bit of fun :P little did I know that you had to compete in Speedos :P which I was not use to wearing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedo) hehe :P now I wished that I had spent those extra hours in the gym instead of blogging :P. Anyway to cut a long long story shot on the entire event...due to unforseen circumstances, we didn't win (nor I for that matter) the competition. However, what I did take back from that experience was I got to meet other active people in the firm (ie. meet more people), had a few beers (after the race of course), food, socialised, got a free pair of speedos :) haha...and most importantly got some exercise! I took part in the 50m free, and the 10x50m relay...never swam so fast before since High School...tiring :) but satisfying to hear your heart pumping and your muscles contracting and expanding...just like a gym workout (but in 35 secs) haha...
Can you spot me? I know I didn't beat the guy in Lane 7 or 5...I just hope I beat the guy in Lane 6 :P Remember Australia is an island, so Aussies just love to swim... ;) Here are some more photos from the day...

Yeong Kheng's Farewell

My ex-PGL leader has left for a 2 year secondment in China. What remained of my PGL had a sending off for him @ Alleybar (I think). Here are some of the pictures from the night (sorry for the delay...finally got some of the pictures...thanks Jdeee :) *miss you all*

Chinese New Year 2007

Another Chinese New Year has come and gone :) and this was the first time I have spent it away from family :P. Definitely much quieter and lack of atomosphere to what I am use to (the visiting of relatives, eating all the bak kua, sweets, collecting ang pows, bai nan, general socialising ;) and yeah well nothing beats the feeling of celebrating CNY at home with your family...this is Sydney after all and its just a normal Saturday and Sunday to the Aussies :P. Despite my reminescing, I am not complaining, I am so happy and thankful that I have got good friends (and even nicer...their families) who have invited me to their houses for CNY dinners. Whilst there may be a lack of CNY goodies, its more the atmosphere and being surrounded by friends and 'families', and home cooked (delicious) foods (that my friends and their mums have slaved hours for in the kitchen preparing) that makes it all the more memorable :)
As mentioned previously, my weekend started off on Fri night when it was Leo's last day at work at Westpac. After drinks at Settlement, the gang (meaning the volleyball gang) headed off to this 'hole-in-the-wall' (reallly...it was down some alley along George St) Korean BBQ place :P. Apologies to my foodie readers out there...I have forgotten the name of this place (or even how to get there :P)

The food was a little like Soul Garden (but much nicer)...I am not usually a fan of Korean food but the it was quite decent (BBQ meat..so cannot go wrong) and the Raspberry Wine was quite unique and crisp. It was quite a big turnout :). After the big meal, we headed off to Karaoke! Karina and myself went and got a bottle of Vodka (which always helps the mood during karaoke ;) haha...I myself didn't think we could finish it..but we did ;)..see I am already red (Mr Chan also gets as red as me when he drinks haha).

Now unfortunately there were plenty of photos taken (but not with my camera) so will just have to post them up in a later post once I get them :P Trust me...from what I can remember there were some pretty good posing photos (everyone thinks..especially me..they can sing once they have had a few drinks in them :P) haha..so much fun!

How long this this go on for? an amazing 4 odd hours! from like 11pm-3am...its amazing, everyone was really into it and was sporty about it...plus the songs were all the favourite English ones (there was also a sprinkling of mandarin and canto songs too for those who knew how to sing them)...there were plenty of laughs, hugs and 'togetherness' haha...not to mention embarrassing photos that will hopefully stay hidden (unless I post them on my blog ;). Overall a good night...cannot wait to see the rest of the karaoke photos :)

Saturday (CNY eve)
Was invited to Chewy's (Nick) place for dinner with his family. Both H, Leo and Alicia also came :). There was sooo much food. Mrs Chew had really slaved during the entire day to cook up a very scrumptous feast. The picture on the left shows her cutting up the home-made peking duck! Yes this is the first time I have ever had home-made peking duck and really it was delicious and one of the best onese I have ever had! Ok now this is not normally a food blog (btw check out my friend's resturant reviews in the 'Yum!' see links on right). But for this post I will make it as such...
The spread... Home-made sharks fin soup...could have drank litres of it!
Fish, Prawns, Nonya mince-meat rolls (the way my grandmother use to make them), Black sauce meat and intestines...
The Nonya rolls again with the Hainanese chicken...exactly like S'pore style (complimented by home-made chicken rice too)
Oysters
The Peking duck ;) The mango pudding I made (with Lish's mum's guidance and supervision...yeah! I can now make mango pudding!) A beautiful lemon meringe tart which Leo brought...very nice and tasty..if I wasn't so full when it came to deserts, would have finished it off :P
The girls finally arrived (from Gold Coast) see how much extra food there is there for them to finish (notice that there is also another duck ready...had trouble just finishing 1 duck :P). So full!

THANK YOU THE CHEWS!!! especially Nicky for inviting us to come and share in the occassion
Sunday (CNY!)
Today, the (almost) entire volleyball gang were invited to Alicia's place for a traditional CNY dinner. Lish and her parents slaved away the entire day cooking, cleaning for the evenings events. Sadly :( it was also Leo's final night in Sydney...he was going to drive back to Melbourne the next morning :P. Look we even had the traditional Yu-Sheng, all the ingredients labouriously sliced and shaved by Lish's parents :) thank you...I think CNY just wouldn't have been the same without having this traditional dish. Reminds me of S'pore when nearly every meal I had with my relatives had Yu-Sheng accompanying it. The fun part was... Yes!!! Wishing everyone health and prosperty in the Year of the Pig *oink oink*...ok back to my food post...we had again tonns to eat, but luckily there were plenty of people around. Here are some of the dishes we had.. Special mention has to be given to the Emperor's Chicken (the only chicken dish there) the meat was so tender - usually its wrapped in dough and then baked with the 5 spices, etc...takes ages to prepare and cook...and the result?...delicious...soft and tender and needless to say it was one of the first things to be finished. Another special mention has to be to Maz's home-made roast pork (am sure you can recognise it above)...the tender meat with the stiff crackling skin..gives S'pore hawkers a run for their money...it was fantastic! Yumm..I can still taste that crackle in my mouth... :P

K also brought her Wii and the remainder of the night was spent drinking wine, eating fruit, mango pudding :p and playing 4 player bowling on the Wii...don't know why but it seems like the girls seem to do better at this computer bowling against the guys..hmmm..:P

THANK YOU THE KOH'S FOR THE WONDERFUL HOSPITALITY DURING THIS TIME!

the girls and Leo
the guys and Leo
Us with our memories of Leo :)
As mentioned previously, this was Leo's last night in Sydney...its always hard when a good friend moves away but at least he will be doing something he will enjoy and be with his family :) and other Melbournite friends so I am happy for him :) Looking forward to visiting him in Melbourne soon! where we shall watch a WC Eagles victory and party hard through the night amongst the various Melbourne bars and pubs (with his friends ;) haha..
