Oh so hard 2...

Its just crazy..been looking at these CVs and covering letters for 2 days now :P and afterawhile they all seem to say the same thing: "passionate about law, enjoy the challenges of doing law, etc etc etc"...and the only way to differentiate them...yes sorry to say but are: Grades or Academic Result! I mean work/legal experience is a factor for sure...but in Sydney everyone seems to have done the same thing. Think now from a recruiter's perspective, what would really sell me on a candidate...is if they can provide examples and highlight what characteristics can be distilled from that (and the result that was obtained) rather than putting the common: "I love challenges and am a good communicator" line (or similar) haha...otherwise I got nothing to work with (I am quite nice and usually want people to get to the next stage in the process when its in their hands...but when there is no reasoning or examples...then it becomes hard for me).
Its quite interesting having done this exercise in CV screening, how obvious it is when someone actually puts in effort in their CV and covering letter (ie. tailoring the covering letter, prior research, etc), whereas previously I thought that no one would be able to tell (believe me..after awhile having seen the standards...it becomes plainly obvious) haha...also you wouldn't believe some of the errors (fatal in some instances) people would put in their covering letter or CV (eg. spelling errors, grammar errors, wrong firm name, repeat words, poor formating, etc) please...just some effort would go a long way, and would not put you in a fatal position in terms of securing an interview :)
So any claims that you make...follow it up with examples and the outcome (all positive I am sure). It is so much better to have a couple of good characteristics (eg. good communicator, team player) backed up by examples, rather than have 100 different descriptive words but with no backing...because...after awhile...I see the same words used over and over again (and I am sure other recruiters would have also :P) and I take no heed to them because there is no proof or backup! I am sure people can be good commicators, motivated to succeed, leader, etc all when they want to...its whether they have actually done so that counts :)
Sigh..back to the pile of CVs...almost there :) TGIF!!!

well.. i dont know which is worse. those whose resumes suck or those whose resumes look fantastic but in person they turn out to be such a letdown.
try interviewing such people during lunch and soon u will be cursing like me...
